In daily life, whether it's neighborhood noise, traffic hustle and bustle, or the sound of equipment operation, it may affect living comfort. Choosing appropriate sound insulation materials can reduce noise interference from the source. The following are recommendations and application instructions for commonly used sound insulation materials for different scenarios.

Part 1:Wall / Ceiling Sound Insulation Materials

This type of material is mainly used to block solid-borne sound (such as footsteps, the sound of moving furniture) and air-borne sound (such as talking, TV sound), and is suitable for sound insulation renovation of walls, ceilings, partitions and other parts.

Sound insulation cotton:

It is made of materials such as polyester fiber and glass fiber, with a light texture and good sound absorption and sound insulation effects. The internal porous structure can effectively absorb sound wave energy and reduce sound reflection. During installation, it needs to be matched with a keel frame and filled in the wall or ceiling interlayer, which is convenient for construction and low in cost. The disadvantage is that the sound insulation effect is limited when used alone, so it is recommended to be used together with sound insulation boards.

Including damping sound insulation boards, solid wood sound insulation boards, composite sound insulation boards, etc. Damping sound insulation boards contain high-density materials and damping layers, which can consume sound wave energy through the "damping effect" and are particularly effective in blocking low-frequency noise (such as elevator operation and water pump sounds). They can be directly fixed on walls or ceilings, and their surfaces can be directly painted or wallpapered, making them suitable for scenarios where convenient construction and aesthetics are pursued.


A high-density coiled material (usually made of rubber or asphalt composite layer) with a thickness of generally 1-3mm can effectively block medium and high-frequency noise. Due to its good flexibility, it can be cut into any shape, making it suitable for pasting on the surfaces of walls, ceilings or pipes. It is often used in conjunction with sound insulation cotton and sound insulation boards to enhance sound insulation effects, and is especially suitable for sound insulation treatment of irregular surfaces.


Unlike sound insulation cotton, sound-absorbing cotton focuses more on "absorbing" sound waves rather than "blocking" them, and can reduce indoor sound reflections (such as echoes in a room and music reverberation). Common types include sponge sound-absorbing cotton and polyester fiber sound-absorbing cotton, which are suitable for spaces that require optimized acoustic environments such as home theaters and study rooms, and are usually used as auxiliary materials in conjunction with sound insulation materials.


Part 2:Door and Window Sound Insulation Materials

Doors and windows are the main channels for noise to enter, and the targeted use of sound insulation materials can significantly improve airtightness.

Sealing strip:

It is divided into rubber sealing strips, silicone sealing strips, etc., which are used to fill the gaps of doors and windows and reduce air-borne sound. Installed at the contact parts of door frames, window frames with glass and door panels, they have extremely low cost but obvious effect, and are especially suitable for sound insulation upgrading of old doors and windows. When choosing, attention should be paid to the matching of size and gap to ensure tight sealing.

Soundproof glass:

Double-layer insulated glass (with an air layer or inert gas layer in the middle) can block most high-frequency noises (such as car horns and human voices); laminated glass (with PVB film in the middle) has a better blocking effect on low-frequency noises and impact sounds (such as the sound of glass breaking and heavy objects hitting). These can be preferred when replacing doors and windows, and are suitable for residences facing the street or close to noise sources.

Soundproof door core panel:

It is used for sound insulation renovation of interior doors, with common materials including honeycomb paper, high-density boards, sound insulation cotton, etc. Filling them inside the door panel can improve the sound insulation performance of the door. When combined with well-sealed door frames and sound insulation strips, it can effectively reduce the transmission of sound between indoor and outdoor areas.


Part 3: Ground Sound Insulation Materials

It mainly addresses solid-borne sound (such as footsteps and the sound of furniture being dragged), preventing noise from transmitting to the floor below or adjacent rooms.

Sound insulation mat:

Made of foamed materials such as EVA and XPE, it is soft and elastic. When laid between the ground and the floor, it can reduce vibration and sound transmission through buffering. It usually has a thickness of 3-10mm and is suitable for being laid under wooden floors and ceramic tiles, especially in families or apartment buildings with children and pets.

Carpet / Floor mat:

Plush carpets and thick floor mats absorb sound waves and vibrations through their fiber layers, which can reduce the generation and transmission of ground noise. Although their sound insulation effect is not as good as that of professional sound insulation mats, they are both decorative and comfortable. They are suitable for daily use in areas such as bedrooms and living rooms and can serve as an auxiliary sound insulation method.

Floating floor system:

The composite structure, consisting of shock-absorbing pads, reinforced concrete layers, sound insulation layers, etc., blocks the rigid connection between the ground and the floor through a "suspension" design, and has an excellent blocking effect on low-frequency vibration noise (such as piano sound, treadmill operation sound). It is suitable for scenarios with extremely high sound insulation requirements, but the construction is complicated and the cost is relatively high.


Part 4:Pipe Sound Insulation Materials

Regarding the water flow sounds and vibration sounds generated by the operation of equipment such as sewage pipes and air conditioning pipes.

Pipe sound insulation cotton:

The rubber and plastic sound insulation cotton with an aluminum foil layer has both sound insulation and thermal insulation functions. When wrapped around the surface of pipes, it can absorb the impact sound and vibration sound of water flow. It needs to be fixed with tape during installation. The aluminum foil layer can reflect sound waves, enhancing the sound insulation effect. It is suitable for the treatment of sewage pipes in bathrooms and kitchens.

Damping sound insulation pipe sleeve:

A cylindrical sound insulation material specially designed for pipelines, with a damping layer on the inner layer and sound insulation cotton on the outer layer, which can effectively suppress pipeline vibration and absorb noise. For high-frequency noise sources such as air conditioner external unit connecting pipes and exhaust pipes, its sound insulation effect is better than that of ordinary sound insulation cotton.

Tips for Selection and Use

Better effect when used in combination: A single material is difficult to completely block noise. It is recommended to adopt the combination scheme of "sound insulation felt + sound insulation cotton + sound insulation board" to deal with noises of different frequencies in layers.


Focus on construction details: Sound insulation materials must be installed tightly to avoid sound leakage through gaps; when constructing walls and ceilings, sound insulation cotton can be filled before sealing the panels to reduce sound wave penetration.


Choose according to the scenario: For street-facing residences, priority should be given to upgrading door and window sound-insulating glass and sealing strips; for neighborhood noise, focus on handling floor sound-insulating mats and wall sound-insulating panels; for equipment noise, emphasis should be placed on pipeline sound-insulating cotton and damping materials.
